Vietnam Chicken/Duck Downs And Feathers Become Valuable Export Items

04/10/02021 | BY linhnt

In the first 6 months of 2021, Vietnam exported 5,000 tons of feathers, earning more than 20 million USD. In which, the Chinese market is still the largest consumer of feathers from Vietnam with more than 4,000 tons.

After agreeing with Vietnam on the form of a feather export business certificate from January 2020, up to now, Vietnam has had 20 local enterprises exporting feathers to the Chinese market.

These feathers are harvested mainly from poultry such as chickens or ducks. In Vietnam, in the past, these products were considered as discarded goods, only sold "rubbish" to make domestic chicken feather brooms, with low value. However, in recent years, chicken feathers and duck feathers have become export items that bring in huge revenue. Currently, there are many websites online to buy this item with prices ranging from 60,000 to 110,000 VND/kg.

According to the Department of Animal Health, in the first half of 2021, domestic enterprises have exported about 5,000 tons of feathers to other countries. In particular, the Chinese market is the place to import the most feathers from Vietnam with more than 4,000 tons, earning about 20 million USD (more than 460 billion VND).

In 2020, 8,000/10,000 tons of feathers have been successfully exported to China by Vietnamese enterprises.

Exported feathers are selected from healthy poultry, ensuring no disease and no impurities. In addition, feathers must also meet the requirements of storage conditions, turbidity standards, and oxygen consumption.

When exporting feathers to China, businesses are required to apply for a quarantine certificate at the request of the importer. If the importing enterprise does not request it, it shall comply with regulations on quarantine of terrestrial animals and animal products transported out of the province.

How are chicken feathers and duck feathers reused?

It seems to be "waste", but chicken feathers and duck feathers are gaining traction in recent years thanks to the development of technical technology. Chicken feathers, duck feathers can be directly produced to make badminton, stone shuttlecocks or brooms.

Meanwhile, ultra-fine and light feathers capable of creating small "airbags" to keep the body warm are often used as raw materials for the production of clothing or towels for personal comfort.

After being purchased, the chicken and duck feathers will be screened and classified into different types depending on the feather size. After that, they will be removed all the dirt clinging to the fur, washed, and dried. In the drying process, the drying person also needs to constantly rotate so that the hair is not sticky and dries quickly.

Once the feathers are dry, pack them into packages to take to the dealer. After purchasing, agents will dry by machine, press into blocks or pack at the request of the buyer, then export.
